Senior Software Engineer
JOKO · Barcelona, Spain
About The Role
We continue hiring more manfredites for Joko!
Can you imagine online shopping being as easy as saying “Alohomora” and unlocking the door to exactly what you need—at the best price, without wasting half your life comparing tabs? Well, that’s exactly what the team at Joko is building: a new gateway to smart shopping.
At Joko, they’re looking for brilliant minds who can communicate clearly, stay endlessly curious, and have their anti-ego perfectly trained.
If you also believe that the future of shopping is still under construction… grab your wand and follow me.
Before we dive into the juicy bits… some context
Joko was born in Xavier’s living room — but not just any living room. That room saw the birth of an idea that would change the way we shop online forever. Three friends — Xavier, Alexandre, and Nicolas — joined forces in 2018 with one obsession: to make shopping easy, efficient, and way less painful than bouncing from one website to another.
And they didn’t come empty-handed. Xavier had been leading a travel portal at Jumia (the biggest e-commerce platform in Africa), Alexandre was building scalable tech at Criteo, and Nicolas brought experience from exigents sectors like banking. These weren’t their first spells.
After years in e-commerce, they realized online shopping was still clunkier than a Thanksgiving dinner with the Roy family from Succession. So, they set out to create a platform that helps people make smarter buying decisions, save some serious cash, and do it all powered by tech and data.
Here's how Xavier, CEO and co-founder, tells it himself

Today, Joko is a certified B Corp helping over 4 million users save money at more than 7,000 stores. And they’re just getting started. They’re expanding fast in the US, and their next big quest is building an AI-powered shopping assistant that knows what you want… before you even finish your sentence.
Joko products not only offer automatic cashback but also automatic coupons, price drop alerts, carbon footprint tracking, and even a buy now, pay later system.
And now? They’re building a shopping assistant powered by AI — it understands your needs before you say them out loud, recommends products with real intelligence, and helps you save money without breaking a sweat.
But what we really love about Joko — and we say this with a full heart and full mouth — is the way they work: radical transparency, open access to information (yes, even board presentations), real trust in the team, and a principle we adore: “Culture is the product we build for our people.”
Don’t just take our word for it 😉 — check out their vision on tech and product and see for yourself.
So… what will I be doing day-to-day?
Well, fellow manfredite, you’ll be part of a versatile, product-minded engineering team that doesn’t shy away from a challenge. They’re looking for people who can float between frontend, backend, mobile, infrastructure, or AI — without sweating the stack.
Your mission? Not just to write code, but to turn complex ideas into elegant solutions, own projects end-to-end, and collaborate with product and data teams to maximize real-world impact. You’ll ship things that matter — and track how they land.
- Translate ideas into software: Whether the spark comes from Product, Ops, or the secret AI lab, you’ll know how to turn a vision into a solid, functional architecture — both on the frontend and the backend.
- Tackle complex challenges: When there’s no manual to follow, that’s your cue. You’ll dive into high-voltage technical problems, roll up your sleeves, and use creativity (and lots of testing) to craft real, working solutions.
- Own your projects end-to-end: You’ll build, deploy, and work hand-in-hand with Product and Data teams to understand the real-world impact of what you’ve created.
- Mentorship and technical leadership: You don’t need to be a lead to have influence. You’ll review specs, give constructive PR feedback, join in on pair/mob programming, and share knowledge with your teammates.
- Bridge tech and business: You’ll work closely with folks from Product and Ops to ensure that technical decisions align with business goals.
- Improve processes and tools: There’s always room to work smarter. You’ll help refine how the team works, making sure speed never comes at the cost of quality.
Just like no two classes at Hogwarts are the same, no two days at Joko look alike either. The team works in task forces — cross-functional squads formed around the company’s quarterly priorities. No rigid sprints, no endless meetings — just focus on what really moves the needle. Tasks are prioritized by Product, and you’ll have the autonomy to pick the next project, bring logic, creativity, and collaboration to the table, and drive it to completion.
While they’re tech-agnostic when it comes to hiring, the stack is sharp and clean: everything runs on TypeScript (both backend and frontend), with React and React Native. Infrastructure is fully managed in AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, S3), so you can focus on code without server headaches. GitLab takes care of version control and CI/CD.
Code is written with care: there's a strong culture of testing, constant code reviews, pair/mob programming, and shared decision-making. The team syncs briefly every other day, and sometimes in some task forces, they have a cooldown — time you get to use however you like: learning something new, refactoring, or prototyping ideas that might benefit the product and the business.
And if you thought this was just about code → nope 🙂↔️. Communication matters. A lot. Talking, writing, explaining clearly and kindly — that’s all part of the job. Written culture is embedded everywhere, and clear, empathetic communication is key. Because at the end of the day, software isn’t built by machines — it’s built by people.

This position is 100% remote from Spain, although priority is being given to profiles located in Barcelona or Madrid or Valencia.
The important thing is that you live in a well-connected location (hence our priority in Barcelona or Madrid), because there will occasionally be meetings or events in Paris or Barcelona, and they'd like you to be able to escape without having to tame logistical dragons.
However, if you live in Barcelona, you'll be closer to the Urquinaona coworking space and can stop by whenever you want: to meet people, share ideas, or simply pick up some branded pens.
Joko doesn’t believe in clocking in, or in forcing early wake-up calls just for show. Here, everyone manages their own schedule in the way that works best for them — because when you're treated like an adult, you act like one. There are no fixed hours or daily meetings that could’ve been a sticky note: just syncs every other day, focused time for deep work, and actual breathing room to think.
You can even work remotely from abroad for up to 3 months a year if you feel like switching up the view (and the time zone). Just make sure you’ve got a solid internet connection, a good mood, and the drive to make an impact. The rest… you build it your way.
Never alone...because you are not going to be the only manfredite inside!
You'll join Joko’s Engineering team — a crew of senior engineers with rock-solid and diverse backgrounds, from ex-Google and other big corps folks to PhDs in Machine Learning. It’s a team that builds with brainpower, curiosity, and real camaraderie — not just lines of code.
You’ll work closely with one of the Engineering Managers, the VP of engineering, who not only steers part of the technical ship but knows what it means to build product from scratch. And you’ll also have a direct line to Alexandre, co-founder and CTO, who’s still deeply involved in Joko’s tech strategy.
Even though the team is spread across Paris, Barcelona, and other corners of Europe, collaboration runs so deep you’ll feel like they’re sitting right next to you — minus the awkward lunchbox negotiations.
