Sutphen is seeking a mechanical design engineer to join our growing team in Urbana, Ohio.

In this role, you will design and develop custom fire apparatus based on customer specifications and the company’s core values. This position works closely with all aspects of the company including sales, operations, outside vendors, and our customers to deliver a complete product that meets their expectations.

## Essential Job Functions

**General Scope and Purpose of Position**

Design and develop custom fire apparatus based on customer specifications and company’s core values. This position works closely with all aspects of the company from sales to final finish as well as outside vendors in order to deliver a complete product that meets customer expectations.

**Essential Functions**

  • Using 3D modeling techniques, design and model the assigned component(s) of the fire apparatus. The design will consist of multiple designed, and vendor supplied parts and assemblies.
  • Work with various departments including Sales, Production, Materials, and Service.
  • Create and maintain fabrication and installation documentation as required and in accordance with engineering and production schedules. These documents will include technical drawings, schematics, work instructions, spreadsheets, bills of materials and various other forms of documentation.
  • Implement changes to designs through Engineering Change Notifications as well as using effective communications that support the ECN process.
  • Direct manufacturing as required to pass on non-intuitive project information.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a professional manner with customers, guests, co-workers and management.
  • Research and implement various outside supplier components based on customer requirements.
  • Work directly with the production team to assist in passing along design information and resolution of discrepancies in design communications.
  • Support the Service team as needed with post-delivery resolution of issues arising in the field. Use the feedback from the service team to improve designs for future builds.
  • Work with minimal supervision and maintain high quality, on-time work output.
  • Design to industry standards including DOT and NFPA.
