About The Role

## Description

The LIVESTRONG Instructor is responsible for supporting cancer survivors as they work through all aspects of the YMCA LIVESTRONG program. Instructs group LIVESTRONG classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement.

Essential Functions

  • Essential functions of the LIVESTRONG instructor include:
  • Initial member assessment and orientation to the LIVESTRONG program.
  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes tailored to cancer survivors’ needs.
  • Creates a welcoming class environment and encourages and motivates class members.
  • Answers questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living. Maintains working knowledge of LIVESTRONG trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records.
  • Attends required training sessions, workshops and staff meetings, including special LIVESTRONG training that could include overnight travel.
  • Participates in fundraising and other special events.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.

## Qualifications

  • Individual must have a desire to work with cancer survivors and provide hope and support throughout the program.
  • Background in exercise sport science or physical therapy preferred.
  • YMCA Healthy Lifestyle Principals, Foundations of Strength and Conditioning, or Foundations of Group Exercise, or one of the Y-USA recognized Equivalent Certifications (or complete within 120 days of hire at Wellness Director’s discretion).
  • Must be empathetic and possess strong listening and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be energetic and able to build strong relationships with participants in the program.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, Oxygen Administration and AED (or within 30 days of hire).

Physical Demands

  • Ability to conduct classes and activities.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
