Job Description
Job Summary
Responsible for delivering safe and effective patient care during the intra-operative period. Assists the surgical team under the supervision of the registered nurse. Ensures adherence to surgical department standards and protocols. Interacts effectively with patients and healthcare team members. Maintains a sterile and organized surgical environment.
Essential Functions
- Assists RN with patient admission and provides input on patient condition.
- Notifies RN or physician of critical findings or changes following admission.
- Assists with documentation on the perioperative record.
- Retrieves supplies and equipment as directed by the RN.
- Scrubs on surgical procedures and assists the surgical team by passing instruments, holding retractors, and suctioning.
- Maintains strict aseptic technique and reports or corrects any breaks in technique.
- Manages and secures medications in the sterile field according to policy.
- Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to policy.
- Maintains patient safety, dignity, and advocates for safe delivery of care.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirement
High school diploma or equivalent and vocational/technical training in a designated technical area
Experience Requirement
- 0–2 years of experience in a healthcare, clinical setting, or a relevant area
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- All experience must be paid and in the same related field.
- Part-time and PRN experience will be prorated based on hours worked per week.
- Volunteer work and internships for academic credit are not counted.
Certifications & Licensures
Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or Tech in Surgery - Certified (Surgery TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Testing, Basic Life Support (BLS)
