**Position Summary**
Haven Charter High School is the first SUNY-authorized Career and Technical Education (CTE) high school in NYC focused on the Health Sciences sector. Opening in July 2025 with an inaugural class of 120 ninth-grade students, Haven will offer students meaningful pathways to both college and career success.
The Student Support Specialist is a highly visible, student-facing member of the Student Support Services Team who supports the safety, culture, and daily functioning of Haven Charter High School. This role is rooted in service to students, staff, and families and plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment.
The Student Support Specialist spends the majority of the school day actively moving throughout the building, monitoring student spaces, supporting student supervision, assisting with school operations, and serving as a positive adult presence for students. The ideal candidate enjoys working with adolescents, thrives in a fast-paced and highly active environment, and is committed to building strong relationships with students while maintaining professional boundaries and consistently reinforcing school expectations.
**Essential Functions**
**Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:**
**Student Supervision and School Support**
- Maintain an active and visible presence throughout the school building to support a safe, orderly, and positive learning environment.
- Assist with student arrival procedures, including monitoring late entry, greeting students, and supporting attendance and check-in processes.
- Monitor hallways, stairwells, common areas, and other student spaces throughout the school day to reinforce school expectations and promote student safety.
- Conduct routine restroom checks and monitor student movement throughout the building during instructional and non-instructional periods.
- Supervise students during lunch periods, maintaining a positive cafeteria environment and supporting appropriate student behavior.
- Assist with student transitions, assemblies, testing, drills, special events, and other school-wide activities.
- Build positive, professional relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries and reinforcing school expectations.
- Serve as a trusted adult presence by providing redirection, guidance, and support to students as needed.
- Partner with the Director of Student Support Services and school staff to reinforce school culture, student engagement, and positive behavioral expectations.
- Respond promptly to student and staff needs throughout the school day.
- Support the work of school leadership and Safety Officers by addressing routine supervision and student management needs, allowing designated staff to focus on higher-level safety concerns and emergencies.
- Report safety concerns, behavioral incidents, or emergencies immediately to the appropriate administrator.
**Staff and Classroom Support**
- Provide short-term classroom supervision when a teacher must briefly step away from a classroom.
- Assist teachers and staff with copying, distributing materials, classroom setup, and other school support needs.
- Support school-wide projects and initiatives that contribute to the effective daily operation of the school.
- Assist with coverage and support needs during meetings, staff absences, and other school operational needs.
**Administrative and Community Support**
- Greet and direct students, families, visitors, and staff in a professional and welcoming manner.
- Support school events, family engagement activities, and special programs as assigned.
- Assist with basic operational and clerical tasks as needed to support the overall functioning of the school.
- Contribute to a positive school climate by modeling professionalism, respect, and a commitment to service.
- Perform other duties assigned by school leadership

**Work Environment**
This position operates within a dynamic school environment and requires regular interaction with students, staff, families, vendors, contractors, and community partners. The Director of Facilities & Campus Safety must maintain a visible leadership presence throughout the campus and demonstrate a commitment to providing a safe, secure, clean, and well-maintained environment that supports teaching, learning, and community engagement.
**Physical Demands**
This position requires frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout the school building. The Student Support Specialist is expected to actively supervise students and support school operations in various locations throughout the day. The role may require climbing stairs, monitoring large student groups, and occasionally lifting or moving items up to 25 pounds. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
**Position Type/Expected Hours of Work**
- Full-time | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM–4:00 PM
- Occasional evenings or weekends may be required based on school needs, special events, or family engagement activities.
