Truck Driver Job Responsibilities
- Drive and operate commercial trucks up to Class 8.
- Follow instructions; locate and read location and road maps.
- Pre-inspect truck.
- Pick up goods and materials, verify loads for accuracy, and deliver them as instructed.
- Load and unload cargo safely.
- Responsible for basic vehicle maintenance; comply with all safe work practices, policies, and
processes always.
- Complete and verify paperwork for accuracy
- Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional
- publications, maintaining personal networks, and participating in professional organizations and
- attending all safety meetings.
Truck Driver Skills and Qualifications
- Traffic laws/ DOT regulations/ driving knowledge
- Pallet jack experience desirable; forklift experience preferred
- For flatbeds, ability to safely tarp full and split loads
- Ability to lift 80 pounds repeatedly throughout day
- Ability to throw straps repeatedly all day
- Must possess physical strength to safely secure loads with tie down bar
- Must demonstrate ability to navigate all turns and backing with excessive tail swing of log
loads
- Must demonstrate skill of navigating safely in off-road conditions, including backing in woods
and under loaders
- Must demonstrate skill in maneuvering with split bunk or double bunked wood with top-heavy
tendencies
- Able to pass random drug tests
- Clean driving record
- No DUI/DWI convictions in the past seven years
- Listening and verbal communication skills
- Dependability
Education, Experience, and Age Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- CDL - Class A or Class B or Class C
- Certificate from an accredited CDL school
- 21 years or older
- Must not have limitations listed that hamper operations
- At least six months of OTR experience
Truck Diver Skills & Competencies
This job requires both physical and mental competencies.
- Physical requirements: You must have good hearing, at least 20/40 vision with glasses or
- corrective lenses, and a 70-degree field of vision in each eye. Drivers cannot be colorblind. Truck
- drivers must have a strong sense of spatial relations to park their vehicles and negotiate tight
- spaces.
- Communications skills: All drivers must be able to read and speak English well enough to
- understand road signs, prepare reports, and communicate with law enforcement officers and the
- public.
- A clean background: A driver must not have been convicted of any felony involving the use of a
motor vehicle, a crime using drugs, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or hit-and
run driving that resulted in injury or death.
