Job Summary
The Design and Art Lab Assistant will support the daily operations of the Art & Design department's labs and studios, as well as the interiors resource room and chair library. This position is ideal for students who are organized, responsible, and have an interest in maintaining a clean, safe, and productive creative environment. The assistant will help monitor lab usage, maintain equipment and materials, support lab safety protocols, and assist faculty and staff with general upkeep and organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor student use of labs and studios to ensure proper use of tools, materials, and equipment
- Assist with daily cleanup procedures and encourage others to maintain shared spaces
- Organize supplies, tools, and materials; restock as needed
- Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment to faculty or lab managers
- Help maintain a safe and clean work environment in accordance with department and school safety policies
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of class or project spaces as needed
- Support department staff with inventory, labeling, and general organizational tasks
- Provide Chair library tours when requested
Qualifications
- Must be a current student with a valid work-study award
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive, responsible attitude
- Basic familiarity with art and design tools, equipment, or materials (training provided)
- Ability to work independently and follow directions
- Good communication skills and a willingness to assist peers and faculty
- Punctual and dependable
Preferred (but not required)
- Previous experience working in studios or labs
- Interest in art, design, or creative disciplines
- Basic knowledge of safety protocols or equipment maintenance

Physical Functions
This position requires the ability to perform tasks commonly associated with studio and lab maintenance. The student must be able to: Stand or walk for extended periods while monitoring labs or performing cleanup; Lift and carry up to 30 pounds (e.g., boxes of supplies, tools, or equipment); Bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive motions for cleaning and organizing; Use hands and fingers to handle tools, materials, and small components; Tolerate exposure to common studio materials (e.g., clay dust, paints, solvents—with proper protective measures); Work in a shared environment that may involve noise, dust, and moderate physical activity.
