Mechanical Design Engineer – Lighting & Exteriors Engineering
Be part of a growing and energetic Exteriors team to engineer, execute and deliver cutting-edge products to global customers. You will work with cross-functional team members to continuously innovate and launch new products for Europe and other growing markets.
Responsibilities
Design to deliver customer-driven Lighting & Exterior system targets for craftsmanship, function, cost and weight
Detail design including surface development, structures, datum strategy, attachments, GD&T
Complete and release component and sub system design, utilizing a mix of in-house design and supplier engineering, where required
Collaborate with key suppliers for approving tooling designs for block out and manufacturing
Support overall vehicle development milestones and prototype/production build events
Collaborate with cross-functional teams for Lighting and Exteriors within the Tesla Design Studio, Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Process, low voltage Electronics, Body-in-White and Procurement groups to ensure system manufacturing and assembly feasibility and serviceability
Take over design responsibility supporting BOM changes, design revisions, CAs and DEVs during production: launch, ramp and sustaining phase, Root-Cause and Corrective Analysis for production issues, maintain all required product development documentation including SOR, DFMEA, DVP&R
Requirements
- Education background in mechanical engineering; or the equivalent in experience and evidence of exceptional ability
- Proficiency in both CATIA V5 and 3DX, good understanding of GD&T in design engineering
- Clear understanding of latest lighting technologies including lightguides, light blades, adaptive forward lighting (AFS) systems, Laser, OLED, Matrix, DMD, etc.
- Basic knowledge of lighting homologation requirements: FMVSS 108 and ECE R48 in particular and understanding of optical system development processes
- Experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, thermoforming, SMC, bonding, etc.
- Experience managing suppliers for product development in lighting, exteriors experience is a plus
- Understand the fundamental differences in engineering between low/high volume production, entry/premium vehicle systems and have examples or a portfolio of completed programs
- Demonstrate an ability to manage difficult projects with tight timing constraints and provide examples of such scenarios throughout your career
