About The Role

Description

This is a Mechanical Engineering role focusing on design of mechanical routing of wire harnesses, component selection, as well as peripheral clip and mounting systems design.

Your role will require global collaboration with harness teams in other Tesla facilities, working on new projects, improving current products and ensuring functionality with all Tesla LV devices and systems that go into our vehicles.

You as the engineer will take the initiative to identify and resolve all possible issues in the given scope, working with the broader engineering, manufacturing, and supply chain teams. You will work directly with suppliers to resolve any design or quality issues.

The type of candidate that would be successful for this position is one who has completed hands on engineering projects, built robots, worked on cars, 3D printed machines etc. Couple this with a can do attitude and the ideas to create new ways of solving problems and you’re set.

Responsibilities

Make key design decisions in resolving electrical/physical integration and optimization issues with other internal Tesla parties on a daily basis, namely for example: Low Voltage Systems, Infotainment, Audio, PCBA Design, Chassis, Interiors, Seats, HVAC, Environmental/Vibe Testing, CATIA Integration, Manufacturing Engineering, etc.

Work with Suppliers for Design-for-Manufacturability to reduce assembly complexity, cost and lead time.

Work with Supplier Industrial Engineer to set up and review production lines at suppliers, including any associated mechanical components.

Support RC (Release Candidate – pre-production) with quick-turn parts and make sure installation works properly as design-intended incl. supporting with a subassembly fixture design prior to full vehicle being available

Highlight design concerns (such as high insertion force on connectors, grommet installation and sealing issues) or reliability concerns on detailed design features and drive the solution to remove these concerns through weekly tests, follow ups, upper management deep-dive reviews and cross functional team reviews

Closely work with the Reliability team to ensure proper testing on finished designs (vibe, corrosion, torque-to-failure, EMI/shielding, etc.)

Requirements

  • Solid Mechanical Engineering fundamentals: thermal, heat dissipation, vibration, strength, durability, corrosion-prevention, materials, etc.
  • Good experience in Design-for-Manufacturability, including Automation
  • Hands-on experience in Dassault 3D modeling, mentor Graphics Capital Harness 2D engineering drawing creation
  • Experience with rapid prototyping
  • Proficient in project task coordination and tracking using JIRA, Confluence, etc.
