Director of Cloud (Enterprise Operations)
Mastercard · Ireland
About The Role
Join Mastercard as the Director of Cloud for Enterprise Operations. In this hands-on leadership role, you will oversee the operation, automation, and continuous improvement of Mastercard's multi-cloud estate. You will lead a globally distributed organization, establish a clear engineering culture, and drive automation and operational excellence. The position is primarily based in Dublin and requires deep technical expertise in AWS and Azure, as well as experience in leading cloud operations at an enterprise scale.
- Lead and manage a globally distributed organization responsible for the reliability, automation, and operational support of Mastercard’s public and hybrid cloud footprint across AWS and Microsoft Azure.
- Establish and promote a strong engineering culture, focusing on blameless post-incident reviews, documented decisions, psychological safety, and the expectation that operational work is engineered away rather than absorbed.
- Drive automation of provisioning, configuration, patching, scaling, failover, cost optimization, and compliance evidence collection across AWS and Azure, and set and defend SLOs and error budgets for critical services.
- Demonstrated success operating within a matrix reporting environment, delivering outcomes through partners and dotted-line teams across time zones and cultures
- Track record of measurably improving developer or builder experience, evidenced by metrics rather than anecdote
- Deep, current hands-on technical grounding in both AWS and Azure, including networking, identity, containers and orchestration (Kubernetes), infrastructure as code (Terraform), CI/CD, and observability tooling
- Practical experience delivering or operating AI/ML or GenAI workloads in the cloud, and a clear point of view on applying LLM-based or agentic tooling to operational problems
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English, including with executive and non- technical audiences
- Strong incident leadership credentials, being able to run a major incident calmly and to lead the systemic follow-up afterwards
- Expert or Professional-level certification in AWS (for example AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional, or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional) and Expert-level certification in Azure (for example Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, or Azure DevOps Engineer Expert). Both clouds required
- Substantial experience leading cloud operations, SRE or platform engineering organizations at enterprise scale, including experience leading managers and multi- region teams
- Knowledge of Global regulatory frameworks relevant to operational resilience in financial services
- Experience building an engineering function in a growing hub, including employer-brand and university-pipeline work
- Knowledge of Kubernetes (CKA/CKS), FinOps Certified Practitioner, or equivalent specialist credentials
- Experience in financial services, payments or another regulated industry, including engagement with regulators and external auditors
