Progyny · New York, United States
About The Role
Join our team as a Senior Principal Software Architect in the healthcare industry. In this role, you will shape and guide the architecture of complex systems and platforms, balancing architectural rigor with pragmatic delivery. You will communicate architectural strategy to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, evaluate industry developments, and drive the adoption of architecture principles and standards across teams. You will also provide hands-on technical leadership and build trusted relationships across various leadership teams.
- Architecting and guiding the development of complex systems and platforms across various technology domains, ensuring alignment with business outcomes and quality attributes.
- Communicating architectural strategy, trade-offs, risk, and technology direction to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and evaluating industry developments to guide implementations.
- Leading architecture reviews, decision forums, learning sessions, and design discussions, and facilitating resolution of cross-team disagreements.
- Identifies and addresses architectural drift, unmanaged complexity, and inappropriate technology use. Works collaboratively with teams to achieve remediation and uses formal exception, accountability, and escalation processes when material risks persist
- Partners with engineering, product, and program leadership to translate architecture decisions into executable plans, protect critical quality attributes, and resolve trade-offs that could materially affect delivery or operational outcomes
- Evaluates relevant industry, vendor, security, regulatory, and platform developments and translates them into actionable recommendations, roadmap changes, or risk-mitigation strategies
- Defines, socializes, evolves, and drives adoption of architecture principles, standards, reference patterns, implementation guidance, and technical decision records; establishes lightweight governance and automated guardrails where appropriate
- Coaches internal and external implementation stakeholders on the appropriate application of architecture, patterns, platforms, and technologies, enabling teams to make sound decisions independently
- Constructively challenges decisions that diverge from agreed architecture, standards, patterns, or governance processes. Ensures exceptions are explicitly risk-assessed, documented, time-bound, and assigned to an accountable owner, escalating material risks when alignment cannot be reached
- Leads architecture reviews, decision forums, learning sessions, and design discussions. Facilitates resolution of cross-team disagreements and acts as an escalation point for material architectural risks or decisions that cannot be resolved within delivery teams
- Participates in relevant industry conferences and working groups on shaping effective architecture and technical roadmaps
- Develops architecture and technical roadmaps with engineering, product, security, data, infrastructure, and business leadership
- Leads evaluation of solution options with balanced understanding of non-functional quality goals such as scalability, reliability, performance, security, maintainability, operability, and cost against risk and implementation constraints
- Provides hands-on technical leadership through discovery, architecture design, trade-off analysis, technical spikes, reference implementations, architecture fitness tests, and critical design or code reviews
- Builds trusted relationships across engineering, product, security, data, infrastructure, operations, and business leadership. Influences with and without formal authority through listening, coaching, facilitation, evidence, and clear communication of technical and business trade-offs
- Shapes architecture strategy and drives alignment across technology domains, platforms, product areas, and business capabilities
