About The Role

Join Horizon Surgical Systems Inc., a pioneering company in the field of surgical robotics. As a Senior/Staff/Principal Hardware Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the development of a novel surgical robotic system for ophthalmology. You will lead and participate in teams, work independently, and contribute to design standards, the Quality Management System, and project planning. This position requires a strong background in robotics and medical device product development, as well as proficiency in CAD software and programming languages.

  • Lead and participate in teams to develop the electro-mechanical subsystems of a complete surgical robotic system.
  • Adhere and contribute to design standards, the Quality Management System, and project planning while applying engineering tools to solve problems.
  • Effectively communicate and present to upper management, within and between teams, and to external parties regarding project progress and challenges.
  • We are seeking highly motivated, detail-oriented, and intellectually inquisitive individuals looking to make a positive impact on healthcare via the development of robotic technology
  • Familiarity with a wide range of transmission mechanisms
  • Preferred: B.S.+10/M.S.+8 YOE in robot product development
  • CAD - SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM, GD&T
  • Minimum: B.S.+5/M.S.+3 YOE in robot product development
  • Experience with novel or unusual kinematic structures
  • Degrees should be in relevant disciplines such as mechanical / electrical / mechatronics / biomedical / robotics engineering, material science, or computer science
  • Experience with robotic components from a wide range of vendors
  • Deep mechanical design expertise of linear and rotary joints
  • Sufficient programming ability in languages/software such as Python, MATLAB, or C/C++ to design, test, and analyze performance of developed hardware systems
  • Proficiency at simulation and analysis of robotic kinematics, dynamics, and workspace
  • Design in compliance with FDA guidelines
  • Hardware design of robotic mechanisms
  • Working knowledge of electrical design, including basic PCB design, component selection, and wiring
  • Must have previously developed, from concept to at least functional prototype, multi-DOF robotic systems
  • Hands-on prototyping, debugging, and testing
  • Staff/Principal levels expected to have personally developed non-traditional multi-DOF robotic systems (not 6/7 DOF industrial arm, SCARA, gimbal, XYZ stage, etc)
  • Ph.D. research on robot mechanism design and robotic hardware development may substitute for industry experience
  • Experience designing robotic systems to pass IEC 60601-1-2
  • Ability to incorporate aesthetics into functional designs
  • Innovative and creative thinking
  • Experience with remote-center-of-motion mechanisms and haptic devices
