Legal Counsel (Litigation & Regulatory)

Join Betterment, a leading investment platform, as a Legal Counsel specializing in litigation and regulatory matters. In this high-impact role, you will manage and respond to claims, defend Betterment in litigations and regulatory proceedings, analyze legislative changes, and advise business partners to improve products and services. You will report directly to the Head of Regulatory and Policy and collaborate with the product counseling team. The ideal candidate has at least 4 years of relevant litigation experience, excellent writing ability, and a passion for Betterment's mission.

• A JD, admission to the NY bar, and at least 4 years of relevant in-house or firm litigation experience
• Excellent writing ability
• An adaptable mindset and innate curiosity
• Passion for Betterment’s products and mission
• Knowledge of financial services regulation, especially the Advisers Act, ERISA, securities and/or banking law and related regulations
• Arbitration experience, especially FINRA or AAA proceedings
• Experience in retail financial services or representing financial services clients
• Familiarity with privacy and/or information security issues
• In-house experience at a startup or high growth company
