About The Role

Join Gusto's PEO Benefits team as a Staff Software Engineer. You'll be part of a groundbreaking initiative to create a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) that offers significant healthcare cost savings for small businesses. In this role, you'll work across the full product lifecycle, from design to launch and long-term iteration. You'll also mentor other engineers and collaborate with various teams to understand customer pain points and develop solutions. This is a unique opportunity to make a real-world impact while working on complex engineering problems at scale.

  • Design, build, and test the Gusto PEO Benefits experience, including benefits shopping and plan-recommendation flows.
  • Mentor other engineers to help solve complex technical problems and improve their performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand customer pain points and develop solutions.
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and make measurable customer impact at scale
  • Ability to mentor engineers to maximize their performance and impact
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and deliver new product capabilities
  • PEO Expertise (Preferred): 3+ years of experience with PEO, with direct experience building PEO flows in a high-growth environment
  • Successful applicants typically have 8+ years of software development experience
  • Experience driving large, cross-functional projects end-to-end through ambiguity — scoping, sequencing, and unblocking without needing the problem pre-broken-down; aligning multiple stakeholders and working with multiple teams
  • Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, applying and sharing best practices to evaluate and scale AI use safely across teams
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment
  • Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails
  • Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code
