Job Description Summary
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of entry level to semi-skilled maintenance tasks in the areas of maintenance, landscaping, construction and equipment operation for City of Boulder transportation corridors, multi-use paths, and medians, and performs related duties as required.
The hiring range for these positions are commensurate with experience
- Street Maintenance Technician I - $23.58 – 34.19
- Street Maintenance Technician II - $25.93 – 37.60
- Street Maintenance Technician III - $28.52 – 41.36
Job Description
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs pavement patching and pothole repairs.
- Performs heavy equipment operation.
- Performs street and alley inspections and clearly communicates the extent of the defects to the appropriate lead staff.
- Operates tools and equipment in the performance of maintenance tasks and may perform minor and preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
- Regularly engages in customer service interactions, including correspondence in CRM system, and in person and over the phone customer interactions.
- Maintains accurate records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
- Performs snow and ice control operations with various equipment.
- Responds to 100% of snow shifts when called from October through April. Performs snow and ice control operations with various equipment.
- Responds to 25% after-hours work. during irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Street Maintenance Technician I, II and II
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to keep accurate records.
- Ability to learn and implement safety practices including situational awareness.
- Ability to learn to operate a variety of streets equipment.
- Skill in using various Microsoft Office software, such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
- Must successfully pass a background check before first day of work and maintain acceptable screening.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Street Maintenance Technician II
In addition to the Street Maintenance Technician I minimum qualifications
- Knowledge and experience with small equipment (i.e lawn mowers, trimmers, small engines).
- Knowledge and experience with using chainsaws.
- Knowledge of safe use of hand tools, commercial and light duty vehicles, outdoor power equipment, and trailers.
Street Maintenance Technician III
In addition to the Street Maintenance Technician I and II minimum qualifications
- Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of chainsaw operation.
- Knowledge of basic asset management software.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Street Maintenance Technician I
Ability to read and understand maps, blueprints, and other construction drawings.
Knowledge of basic asset management software.
Knowledge of safe use of hand tools, commercial and light duty vehicles, outdoor power equipment, and trailers.
First Aid with CPR and AED Certification.
OSHA 30-hour Training Certification.
One (1) year experience with snow operations.
One (1) year landscaping installation and irrigation experience.
One (1) year experience with hot mix asphalt.
One (1) year of experience in outdoor, physical maintenance or construction with preference given for experience in landscape irrigation including basic knowledge of plant, tree, and weed identification.
One (1) year experience in heavy construction.
Street Maintenance Technician II
In addition to the Street Maintenance Technician I preferred qualifications
Two (2) years’ experience with snow operations.
Two (2) years’ experience with hot mix asphalt.
Two (2) years’ landscaping installation and irrigation experience.
Two (2) years’ experience in outdoor, physical maintenance or construction with preference given for experience in landscape irrigation including basic knowledge of plant, tree, and weed identification.
Street Maintenance Technician III
In addition to the Street Maintenance Technician I and II preferred qualifications
Three (3) years’ experience in hot mix asphalt.
Three (3) years’ landscaping installation and irrigation experience.
Three (3) years’ experience in outdoor, physical maintenance or construction with preference given for experience in landscape irrigation including basic knowledge of plant, tree, and weed identification.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Street Maintenance Technician I
High School Diploma or GED.
No experience required.
Must hold and maintain a valid drivers' license.
Commercial Driver’s License, Class A or B with tanker endorsement and without restrictions or Permit or new hires have the ability to obtain within nine (9) months with supervisor approval.
American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) Flagger Certification or equivalent certification as a traffic flagger or new hires have the ability to obtain within nine (9) months.
Front-End Loader Certification or new hires have the ability to obtain within nine (9) months.
Skid-Steer Loader Safety Training Certification or new hires have the ability to obtain within nine (9) months.
OSHA 10-hour Training Certification or new hires have the ability to obtain within one (1) year.
Street Maintenance Technician II
In addition to the Street Maintenance Technician I Required Education and Experience
- Two (2) years’ experience in heavy construction.
- One (1) year snow plowing experience.
- Commercial Driver’s License, Class A or B with tanker endorsement and without restrictions or new hires have the ability to obtain within six (6) months after passing probation.
- First Aid with CPR and AED Certification.
Street Maintenance Technician III
In addition to the Street Maintenance Technician II Required Education and Experience
- Three (3) years’ experience in heavy construction.
- Three (3) years of snow plowing experience

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Physical and Mental Effort: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits effective communication on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the operation of equipment, and review, evaluation and preparation of a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the operation of equipment. Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, which permits work in an outdoor environment in a variety of weather conditions and in confined spaces and to operate equipment while working in and around moving traffic. Upper body strength to lift and carry equipment and supplies as needed. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions.
Work Environment: Works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions in and around moving traffic, and in confined spaces. Works in a setting subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Ability to work irregular hours, that include weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies.
Machines and Equipment Used: Hand and power tools, long-handled tools, jackhammer, chainsaw, tamper, grinder, compressor, safety devices, utility truck, single and tandem-axle dump trucks, backhoe, loader, two-way radio, telephones, calculators, computers and multi-function printers.
