Ops Leads

BMLL has a number of operational functions spread across the firm, covering

• Data parsing,
• Derived data generation,
• Customer operations tasks (such as new user on-boarding)
• Monitoring the web services (which run entirely on AWS).

The Operations Lead is a new role at BMLL to take ownership of all these aspects of operations.

The Role

Reporting to the CTO, the Operations Lead will work alongside the DevOps lead and the software development team leads on all aspects of daily operations. Our business is all about creating value through data, so the key focus for the role is data operations and service delivery to the customers. At present we have just one dedicated operations engineer, so this will be a hands-on role, with a view to growing the team as the company develops. A close integration with the dev teams will be essential as we have a strong dev/ops culture, so it is expected that the Ops engineers will participate in the agile processes for each dev team.

You will drive operational resilience across the firm, improving procedures and automation.

One of the key processes at BML is the change management process; you will be responsible for ensuring this stays fit for purpose as the company evolves. You will also coordinate with the other team leads on development priorities.

Responsibilities

• Daily data operations & data maintenance, ensuring data delivery to our customers
• Communicating with suppliers about operational issues, managing the relationships
• Ad hoc data operations; managing reparsing and regeneration of data
• Deployment of applications to the production system
• Technical customer on-boarding
• Monitoring of web services
• Capacity planning and cost management

Requirements

Skills & Abilities

• Python and shell scripting in a Linux environment
• Problem solving and diagnosing issues on a production system
• Working well under pressure
• Strong cross-team communication skills

Skills and Experience

• Running a production batch data operation with a scheduler (e.g. Airflow)
• Managing an Ops team and managing out of hours support
• Operational monitoring, reporting, alerting, ideally using tools in a cloud environment
• Operating a system built using Infrastructure as code
