About The Role

ICBL is Barbados’ largest general insurance provider, writing business in all areas of general insurance including, Property, Liability, Accident, Motor, Marine, Aviation and Transit Insurance. ICBL also offers insurance coverage for Group Life, Group Health and Individual and Group Pensions.

We are recruiting an Assistant Manager – General Ledger & Financial Reporting who will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the general ledger and ensuring accurate, timely and compliant financial reporting within an insurance environment. The role supports statutory, regulatory and management reporting, while ensuring adherence to IFRS and insurance-specific accounting requirements.

The position is at the level of Grade 3 (Assistant Manager) in the Company’s compensation structure and will report to the Senior Manager - Financial Reporting & Controls or designate.

Main Areas of Responsibility

  • Oversees the maintenance of the general ledger, ensuring accurate recording of insurance-related financial transactions, including premiums, claims, commissions and reinsurance entries.
  • Manages the month-end, quarter-end and year-end close processes, ensuring strict adherence to reporting deadlines.
  • Prepares and reviews journal entries, accruals and complex insurance accounting adjustments.
  • Ensures accurate reconciliation of balance sheet accounts, including insurance technical balances (e.g., unearned premiums, outstanding claims, reinsurance recoverables).
  • Supports preparation of statutory financial statements in compliance with IFRS 17 (where applicable) and local regulatory requirements.
  • Assists with regulatory reporting submissions to insurance regulators and other governing bodies.
  • Performs variance analysis on key insurance financial metrics, including loss ratios, premium movements and claims trends.
  • Supports internal and external audit processes, including preparation of audit schedules and resolution of queries.
  • Ensures compliance with internal controls, accounting policies and insurance regulatory standards.
  • Collaborates with Underwriting, Claims, actuarial, Accounts Payables and Receivables and Treasury teams to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Supports implementation of system enhancements and process improvements within the financial reporting function.
  • Supervises and mentors junior staff within the General Ledger and Reporting teams.
  • Contributes to automation and efficiency improvements in reporting processes.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3–7 years’ experience in general ledger accounting or financial reporting, preferably within the insurance industry but not required.
  • Progress toward or interest in pursuing a professional designation.
  • Strong understanding of IFRS (particularly IFRS 17 an advantage) and insurance accounting principles.
  • Experience with insurance financial processes such as premiums, claims and reinsurance accounting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and ERP systems (e.g. Sage).
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines during reporting cycles.
  • Strong leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively across finance, actuarial, underwriting and claims teams.
  • Strong ability to use judgment and discretion.
  • Displays integrity, leading by example.

Compensation
