At Johnson Matthey's West Deptford, NJ facility, Process Engineers report to the Refinery Process Engineering Lead providing day-to-day engineering support to ensure safe and efficient operations. This role focuses on monitoring process performance, establishing operating baselines, identifying opportunities to improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), and supporting continuous improvement initiatives that enhance productivity, recovery, and process safety performance. Process Engineers work closely with Operations, Controls, Maintenance, Process Safety, and EHS to troubleshoot issues, optimize process performance, and maintain a safe working environment. The position requires strong technical and communication skills, a hands-on approach to problem solving, and a significant presence in the plant supporting daily operations.

The Role

As a Process Engineer, you will help drive our goals by

  • Providing day-to-day process engineering support by monitoring process performance and partnering with Operations, Controls, Maintenance, Process Safety, and EHS teams to ensure safe, compliant, reliable, and efficient refinery operations.
  • Establishing and maintaining process performance baselines to identify opportunities and lead initiatives that improve OEE, productivity, recovery, and process safety.
  • Troubleshooting process issues, participating in root cause investigations, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Maintaining operating procedures, batch sheets, engineering documentation, and process control strategies.
  • Supporting PHAs, MOCs, incident investigations, and other process safety activities.
  • Providing other engineering support as needed.

Key Skills that will help you succeed in this role

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering or related engineering discipline and 1–3 years of experience in a chemical processing, refining, metals, or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of chemical engineering fundamentals, including mass and energy balances, fluid flow, heat transfer, reaction engineering, and process control.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze operational data and develop practical solutions to improve OEE, recovery, throughput, quality, reliability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across all plant teams to drive operational improvements.
  • Hands-on approach to manufacturing support, including a willingness to spend significant time in the plant supporting operations, troubleshooting process issues, and identifying improvement opportunities.
