Location: Pontiac, MI (Hybrid and Community based work)

Compensation: $55,319 - $74,117

Oakland County Health Division is seeking a dedicated and creative Public Health Educator II to develop and deliver programs that empower residents to make healthier choices and strengthen community well-being. This is a community-focused role where you'll work directly with residents, schools, organizations, and community partners to promote healthy lifestyles through education, outreach, and evidence-based health initiatives.

What you'll do

• Develop, implement, and evaluate community health education and health promotion programs
• Build partnerships with community organizations, schools, and local agencies to advance public health initiatives
• Deliver educational presentations, workshops, and outreach programs for residents of all ages—from youth to older adults
• Support a variety of health education initiatives, including child passenger safety, healthy eating, suicide prevention, and other community wellness programs
• Create engaging health education materials and public health communications for a variety of audiences
• Provide technical assistance and consultation to community partners and Health Division staff
• Conduct community outreach and assist with assessing community health education needs
• Collaborate across the Health Education team to support multiple public health programs and special initiatives
• Utilize County technology and software to manage programs, reporting, and educational activities

Minimum Qualifications

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS & ABILITIES

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Community Health Education, Public Health Education, School Health Education, Health Communications, or a closely related field. NOTE: Applicants possessing transcripts from a college or university outside of the United States will be required to provide documentation of degree equivalency from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services ( http://naces.org/members.html ). The degree evaluation will be required for application processing.
• Have had at least one (1) year of full-time professional experience in the field of health communication/education. NOTE: A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in health education, public health, community health, or closely related area may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.
• Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Out of country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date
• Pass the complete examination, including the employment physical, established for this classification.
• Successfully complete the six month probationary period.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience in a health agency in a position related to Community or Public Health Education.
• Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health, public health education and scientific basis of health and illness.
• Ability to utilize data to identify and analyze the relative importance of behavioral and situational factors in the etiology of health problems and concerns for individuals and communities.
• Ability to identify and utilize a range of individual and group process skills to promote effective problem‑solving and decision‑making.
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with health professionals and community groups.
• Ability to develop and present oral and written reports.
• Ability to cope with difficult or emergency situations requiring immediate decision in accordance with divisional policies and objectives.

• Ability to exercise mature judgement and initiative in analyzing problems and recommending solutions.
• Ability to develop and implement media and health communication efforts.
• Reasonable ability to utilize current word processing, graphics, spreadsheet, database, e-mail and Internet software.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Possess a valid United States motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Out of country driver’s license holders will be required to obtain the appropriate valid State of Michigan driver’s license before the hire date
• Must submit to immunizations as required by the Health Division, and to periodic tuberculin skin tests or chest X-rays at County expense.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Participates in community organizations and internal Health Division committees.
• Participates in orientation and in-service training sessions for Health Division staff and students to promote understanding of the nature, value and uses of health educational concepts, theories and methods.
• Conducts health information media campaigns and health education classes and trainings.
• Develops and provides health communication activities including website content, social media messaging and other communication tools and methods.
• Assists the Health Division in developing post meeting assessments, questionnaires and follow-up surveys for Health Division evaluations.
• Provides technical assistance to the Health Division staff in developing, implementing and evaluating health education programs requiring a knowledge of the theories of planning and knowledge gained through exposure to various agencies.
• Participates in some multi-disciplinary teams of Health Division personnel to develop and manage health programs to ensure an appropriate utilization of health education resources.
• Assists in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of grant programs which serve target populations with specific health education interventions.
• Utilizes current countywide and/or department specific software to complete assignments.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

• May collaborate with students, give guidance, and assist in peer training.

ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to communicate to accurately convey information.
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, carry and transfer materials. Regularly required to sit or stand at length, bend reach, squat or kneel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Work is performed in community locations, outdoors and office or hybrid work environments.
