About The Role

Dave Steel Company is seeking an experienced, hands-on Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) to lead and continuously improve our safety culture across multiple-steel fabrication facilities. This executive leadership position is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining world-class environmental, health, and safety programs that protect our employees, ensure regulatory compliance, and support operational excellence.

The ideal candidate is a strategic leader who can build relationships at every level of the organization while holding employees accountable to the highest safety standards. This individual will partner closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Human Resources, and executive leadership to drive a proactive, behavior-based safety culture.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and execute the company's Environmental, Health & Safety strategic plan.
  • Lead the organization's safety culture initiatives with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Serve as the company's subject matter expert on OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable regulations.
  • Establish measurable safety goals, KPIs, and performance metrics.
  • Provide regular reports to executive leadership regarding safety performance and improvement initiatives.
  • Develop annual departmental budgets and manage EHS expenditures.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental and safety regulations.
  • Maintain OSHA compliance for fabrication shops, warehouses, and construction job sites.
  • Oversee environmental permits, reporting requirements, hazardous waste management, air quality, stormwater, and spill prevention programs.
  • Coordinate OSHA inspections and regulatory audits.
  • Maintain all required documentation and records.

Safety Programs

  • Develop and maintain company safety policies and procedures.
  • Lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and risk assessments.
  • Ensure contractor safety compliance.

Environmental Management

  • Oversee environmental compliance programs.
  • Manage waste disposal and recycling initiatives.
  • Coordinate environmental audits.
  • Develop sustainability initiatives where appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with EPA regulations and reporting requirements.

Operational Support

  • Conduct routine inspections of fabrication facilities and project sites.
  • Partner with Maintenance and Operations to reduce workplace hazards.
  • Participate in facility expansion and equipment installation projects to ensure safety compliance.
  • Support continuous improvement and Lean Manufacturing initiatives.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent industry experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive Environmental Health & Safety experience.
  • Minimum 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Experience in structural steel fabrication, heavy manufacturing, industrial construction, or metal fabrication required.
  • Multi-site manufacturing experience preferred.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • OSHA 30-Hour
  • CHMM
  • First Aid/CPR Instructor
  • Lean/Six Sigma certification (preferred)

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in manufacturing and construction environments.
  • Frequent walking throughout fabrication facilities.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, respirator, and steel-toed boots.
